Top-Ranked South Carolina Halts NC State’s Comeback Attempt in 71-57 Victory
In a high-stakes matchup, No. 1 South Carolina overcame a fourth-quarter surge from No. 9 NC State to secure a 71-57 victory. As the Wolfpack chipped away at the Gamecocks’ lead, Te-Hina Paopao delivered five consecutive points, including a clutch corner three-pointer, to shut down any hopes of an upset.
The win not only marked South Carolina’s first victory over a ranked opponent this season but also extended their impressive winning streak to 40 games. This achievement makes the Gamecocks the second Division I program to assemble multiple 40-game winning streaks. Paopao and MiLaysia Fulwiley were instrumental in the victory, scoring 23 and 18 points, respectively, while the team collectively shot an efficient 50% from the field.
The Gamecocks maintained control from the second quarter onward, keeping NC State at bay despite the Wolfpack’s late-game push. With less than five minutes left, NC State closed the gap to just seven points, but South Carolina quickly responded, restoring a comfortable double-digit lead and sealing the game with authority.
Looking ahead, South Carolina will host Coppin State on Nov. 14 for their home opener, while NC State returns to face Kent State at home on the same date.
