Flying High: Gio Musiello Commits to Rice University Swimming
Eagle Aquatics’ standout swimmer Gio Musiello is officially taking her talents to Rice University. The Miami native and Gulliver Preparatory Academy alum will join the Owls’ swim team for the 2025-26 season, bringing her versatile skill set to Houston, Texas. From dominating the 200 IM to crushing it in the backstroke and freestyle events, Musiello is ready to make waves in collegiate swimming.
“I am blessed to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Rice University!!” Musiello shared. “Thank you to my family, friends, and coaches who have supported me in and out of the pool. I also want to give a special thank you to the Rice coaches for supporting me throughout this entire process! Go Owls! 🦉💙”
A High School Career Worth Celebrating
Musiello wrapped up her high school swimming career with a bang. Competing for Gulliver Prep, she claimed the FHSAA Class 2A state title in the 200 IM, improving on her runner-up finish from the previous year. She also snagged fourth place in the 100 backstroke, contributing to Gulliver Prep’s third-place team finish overall. Musiello’s achievements didn’t stop at the state level—she’s also a two-time defending champion in the 400 IM at the FG PST Speedo Winter Championships, where she clocked a personal best of 4:23.67 in March 2024.
A Swimmer for All Seasons
With a versatile range of events in her arsenal, Musiello is poised to be a game-changer for Rice. Her top short-course yard (SCY) times include:
- 200 freestyle: 1:51.37
- 200 backstroke: 2:01.97
- 200 butterfly: 2:03.03
- 200 IM: 2:03.64
- 400 IM: 4:23.67
Her times are already fast enough to have landed her in the ‘B’ finals at the 2024 American Athletic Conference (AAC) Championships, showcasing her potential to make an immediate impact. Whether she focuses on the grueling 400 IM, contributes to the 800 freestyle relay, or adds depth to multiple events, Musiello’s presence will undoubtedly elevate the Owls’ roster.
What’s Next for Rice Swimming?
Rice’s swim team, under the leadership of a dynamic coaching staff, is coming off a strong 2024 season. The Owls placed third at the AAC Championships and sent two swimmers, Ella Dyson and Arielle Hayon, to the NCAA Division I Championships. With Musiello’s arrival, the team gains a versatile swimmer whose strengths in IM and butterfly events add depth and flexibility to meet lineups.
Her 200 fly time would have ranked as the third-fastest on Rice’s 2023-24 roster, while her 200 free, 200 back, and 200 IM times would have placed her fourth. And in the 400 IM? She’d be an instant top-five contender. Rice’s third-place finish at the AAC Championships may just be the launching pad for even greater achievements with Musiello in the mix.
Beyond the Pool
Musiello’s journey to Rice reflects not just her athletic talent but also her commitment to academics and personal growth. Her enthusiasm for joining the program is a testament to the culture Rice has built—one where student-athletes thrive both in and out of competition. As she takes this next big step, Musiello is ready to soar as an Owl, bringing her unique blend of grit, grace, and good vibes to the pool deck.
From her impressive high school accolades to her potential to shine at the collegiate level, Gio Musiello is a name to watch. Rice Swimming just added a rising star, and the AAC better take notice. Go Owls! 🦉
