Minnesota Wrestling Finds Its Groove After Tough Big Ten Loss

Minnesota’s wrestling team has bounced back in a big way after a tough 21-13 loss to Nebraska, a dual where the Gophers dropped seven matches—five by three points or fewer. Since then, they’ve turned things around in dominant fashion, racking up convincing wins over Michigan, Wisconsin, Northwestern, and Rutgers to improve to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in Big Ten competition.

Learning From Losses

“The big thing is, you’ve got to win the close ones,” head coach Brandon Eggum said. “We didn’t do that against Nebraska, but we made the adjustments and got back on track.”

Minnesota proved just that, winning nine of their next 12 close matches while blowing past their opponents with victory margins of 15, 36, 17, and 19 points. But their biggest test yet awaits—#6 Ohio State in a Friday night showdown in Columbus.

A Clash of Titans

With both teams sitting in the top 10, the Buckeyes and Gophers are evenly matched, and Eggum believes the outcome could hinge on bonus points. “There are a lot of tight battles, so if there’s an upset or a major decision, it could swing the dual,” he said.

The match will feature multiple top-20 showdowns, highlighted by a marquee battle at 285 pounds between #1 Gable Steveson and #8 Nick Feldman. Minnesota will also get a boost with the return of #7-ranked 125-pounder Cooper Flynn. Another key bout to watch will be at 184 pounds, where #4 Max McEnelly faces off against #17 Ryder Rogotzke in a renewal of their 2023 Minnesota high school state finals rivalry.

Mentality Matters in Big Ten Wrestling

Following their showdown in Columbus, Minnesota will host Purdue on Sunday. Eggum emphasizes a consistent approach, regardless of the opponent.

“To accomplish what we want as a team, guys just have to take care of their own business,” Eggum said. “The Big Ten schedule is relentless—you can’t dwell on losses. You have to be ready for the next challenge every week.”

That mindset is critical as the team eyes the national tournament. “You don’t have time to sulk. If you lose, you’ve got another top-tier opponent waiting. It prepares our guys for March.”

Gable’s Return Brings Energy

Two-time NCAA champion and Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson’s return to Minnesota this semester has energized the squad. “He loves being back in the locker room, around the team,” Eggum said. “He’s always had a vision of bringing a team trophy back to Minnesota, and that’s motivating him.”

Steveson is sharpening his skills and relishes big moments. “He’s a showman,” Eggum added. “He thrives under the lights, and he’s looking forward to these ranked matchups. He gets bored if he doesn’t have a challenge.”

Minnesota’s resurgence has set the stage for a crucial Big Ten stretch. With Steveson leading the way and the team regaining momentum, the Gophers are primed for a strong push toward the postseason.
